Turkey can play a role in the reconstruction of Afghanistan
Afghanistan is changing very fast. No one could have imagined that the Taliban would take control of Afghanistan so quickly. Within a few days, the whole of Kabul fell to the Taliban. Many people are now gathering at the airport hoping to leave Afghanistan. And millions of bodies are dreaming of leaving the Afghan country. Because if you stay in the country, you have to die or you have to stay under the strict rule of the Taliban. News from Daily Sabah.
The Taliban has asked all foreign troops to leave Afghanistan by August 31. So once the deadline is over, everyone is uncertain about what will happen after Monday. Although everyone left, Turkey wanted to stay in Afghanistan. But they have also been told to leave Afghanistan. That is why Turkish troops started leaving Afghanistan. Turkey thought it would have control of the Kabul Hamid Karzai International Airport. But nothing happened as expected.
Turkey, of course, has good reason to think so. They thought some foreign troops would remain in Afghanistan and that Taliban control would be limited. Since the Taliban will control everything, what does it mean to take control of just one airport? It would also be a kind of occupation and Ankara never had such an agenda. Meanwhile, the Taliban has sought Ankara's help to help the Afghan people. Although it is a dangerous and risky path.
Turkey has a special place in the eyes of Afghanistan and the Afghan people. It is clear that everyone loves Turkey and they have never been seen as an occupying force. And this is the biggest advantage. And using this opportunity, Ankara wants to build a relationship with the new Afghan government, which is of course the Taliban.
Since we cannot change the reality in Afghanistan, our goal as responsible global citizens should be to keep Afghanistan as open to the world as possible. And that is only possible when the Taliban keep in touch with the world. Having a relationship with the Taliban can be a way to keep them connected and stand in the way of major human rights violations.
However, this does not mean that Turkey should not be in contact with the Taliban. Turkey and all other countries need to talk to them to keep Afghanistan open to the rest of the world. That is the thing that the Turkish government is doing. Ankara is taking a pragmatic approach to Afghanistan and adopting new realities. Foreign Minister Mevlt chavutoglu said Turkey would work in coordination with the international community on its position on the recognition of a new government in Afghanistan.
And at this critical juncture, Turkey can play an important, constructive and positive role and contribute to the reconstruction of Afghanistan.
