A baseless statement: The virtue of fasting the first ten days of Muharram |
The virtue of fasting for the first ten days of the month of Muharram has been mentioned in several pamphlets entitled The Virtues of the 12 Moon. In the language of a booklet-
The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) further said that a person who fasts for the first ten days of Muharram will have the virtue of fasting during the day and worshiping at night for ten thousand years.
This is a baseless fabrication. It is also not found in the book on fake descriptions. A close description is found in the book on fake descriptions-
Whoever fasts for the first nine days of Muharram, Allah will make a tent for him in the air; Which will be one mile in length-width. It will have four doors.
Ibn al-Jawzi rah. After mentioning the above description said-
This is a fabricated narration in the name of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him).
(This narration contains Musa Attabil) Ibn Hibban rah. Said, Musa Attabil has narrated many false things in the source of Anas; It is not lawful to write or mention them except to express amazement over these (expressions of vanity and its). -Almaujuat, Ibn al-Jawzi, b. 2, p. 199
More notes: Allaalil mashnuah, b. 2, p. 108; Tanzihush Shariah, b. 2, p. 148; Taykiratul Maujuat, p. 116
In fact, the issue of fasting in the first decade of the month came in the case of the month of Zilhaj. In these pamphlets it has been attached to Muharram and great virtues have been added. Umm al-Muminin Hazrat Hafsa Ra about fasting in the first decade of Zilhaj. Narrated from, he said-
The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) never missed four deeds. The fast of Ashura, the fast of the first decade of Zilhaj (i.e. the first nine days), the fast of three days of each month, the two rak'ahs of Sunnah prayer before Fajr. -Sunan Nasai, Hadith 2415; Sahih Ibn Hibban, Hadith 6422; Musnad Ahmad, Hadith 26339
And the special virtue has been mentioned only in the case of fasting on the tenth day of Ashura or Muharram. Abu Qatada. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said:
Regarding the fast of Ashura, I am hopeful that Allah will forgive the sins of the past one year (sagira) by it. -Sahih Muslim, Hadith 1162
It is to be noted that although there is no mention of fasting in the first decade of the month of Muharram, it is generally encouraged to fast in the month of Muharram. Abu Huraira. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said:
The best fast after Ramadan is the fast of Muharram, the month of Allah. -Sahih Muslim, Hadith 1163
Ali Ra. Narrated from: A man asked the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him):
Messenger of God! In which month do you instruct me to fast after Ramadan? The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) replied:
If you want to fast in another month after Ramadan, then fast in Muharram. Because it is the month of Allah. There is a day in this month on which Allah has accepted the repentance of many. In the future too, more people will accept repentance on that day. -Jame Tirmizi, Hadith 851
Imam Tirmidhi rah. Said-
Translated from the original Bengali by Al Kawthar
