Washington has opposed giving India permanent membership and veto power in the UN Security Council. The Russian news agency Sputnik reported the opposition to the administration of President Joe Biden, without naming any US officials.
According to the news agency, Narendra Modi has been seeking permanent membership of the UN Security Council since he was first elected Prime Minister of India in 2014.
According to Sputnik, three former US presidents, George W. Bush, Barack Obama and Donald Trump, have taken a positive view of India's aspirations, but current President Joe Biden has objected.
In January this year, India's two-year phased temporary membership in the UN Security Council began. This is the first time India has become a temporary member of the Security Council under Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
This is the eighth time since the founding of the United Nations that India has been granted temporary membership in the Security Council.
