The Messenger of Allah ๏ทบ said in Sahih al-Bukhari:
“Fasting is a shield. So when one of you is fasting, he should avoid obscene speech and ignorant behavior. If someone fights or insults him, he should say: ‘I am fasting.’”
This powerful hadith defines fasting not merely as abstaining from food and drink, but as a spiritual armor protecting the believer from sin and moral weakness.
The Meaning of “Shield”
Scholars explain that fasting shields a believer in two ways: it protects from committing sins in this world and shields from punishment in the Hereafter. When a Muslim controls hunger and thirst, they are also training their soul to control anger, pride, and harmful speech.

Ramadan and Character Reform
Ramadan is a month of character transformation. Many people can stop eating for 14 hours, but the real challenge is controlling the tongue and temper. The Prophet ๏ทบ emphasizes that fasting should elevate behavior.
- Avoid backbiting
- Control anger
- Speak gently
- Respond to negativity with patience
Practical Application
If someone insults you while fasting, instead of reacting emotionally, say calmly: “I am fasting.” This statement reminds both you and the other person of your spiritual state.
Reflection
Ask yourself: Is my fasting changing my character? Ramadan is not a hunger exercise; it is a training program for the heart and soul.
