“He who created death and life to test you [as to] which of you is best in deed — and He is the Exalted in Might, the Forgiving.” (Surah Al-Mulk, 67:2)

๐ŸŒ™ Reflection:

This verse from Surah Al-Mulk reveals one of the greatest truths of human existence — that life and death are both created by Allah as part of a divine test. Our purpose is not to merely exist, but to live in a way that pleases our Creator. Every trial, joy, and hardship we face is a question in this grand examination.

๐Ÿ’ญ Why Life and Death Were Created

  • 1. To Test Our Faith: Life is not random. Every blessing and hardship is a way to see who remains faithful, grateful, and patient.
  • 2. To Evaluate Our Deeds: It’s not about who lives longest or gains the most wealth — but who performs the best deeds with sincerity.
  • 3. To Remind Us of Accountability: Death reminds us that this world is temporary. What truly matters is what we send ahead for the Hereafter.

๐Ÿ“ฟ Lessons for Modern Muslims

In an age of comfort and distraction, this verse grounds us. It reminds every Muslim that our tests — whether poverty or prosperity, health or sickness — are opportunities to show faith, patience, and gratitude. When we understand this, life becomes meaningful; no moment is wasted.

๐ŸŒป Practical Applications

  • Start your day with the intention to earn Allah’s pleasure through your work, family, and service.
  • When facing difficulties, say: “Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji’un” (We belong to Allah and to Him we will return).
  • Keep your heart humble in success — for the test of ease is often harder than the test of hardship.
  • Reflect daily: “If I die tonight, what good deeds will meet me tomorrow?”

๐Ÿ“– Tafsir Insights

Ibn Kathir explains that Allah created life and death to show His absolute power and to distinguish between His obedient servants and the heedless ones. Al-Qurtubi adds that “the best of deeds” means deeds done with sincerity (ikhlas) and in accordance with the Sunnah. It’s not about quantity but quality — one sincere act may outweigh a lifetime of careless worship.

๐ŸŒบ A Reminder for the Soul

We live in a time when people chase worldly success, yet forget that success in Allah’s eyes is measured by righteousness. This verse shifts our mindset: life is not about passing time, but passing the test of time.

๐Ÿคฒ Short Dua

“Allahumma la taj‘al al-dunya akbara hammina wa la mablagha ‘ilmana.”
(O Allah, do not make this world our greatest concern, nor the limit of our knowledge.)
