Ashura (10th of Muharram) is one of the most significant days in the Islamic calendar. It holds great historical and spiritual importance for Muslims around the world, rooted in both the era of Prophet Musa (AS) and the tragic events of Karbala involving Imam Hussain (RA).
🌙 Historical Background of Ashura
According to authentic narrations, when Prophet Muhammad ﷺ arrived in Madinah, he found the Jews fasting on the 10th of Muharram in gratitude for the day Allah saved Prophet Musa (AS) and the Children of Israel from Pharaoh. The Prophet ﷺ said:
“We are closer to Musa than them.”
(Sahih al-Bukhari)
He ﷺ then encouraged the Muslims to fast on this day. Later, he recommended fasting on the 9th and 10th or the 10th and 11th to differentiate from other faiths.
🩸 Lessons from Karbala
The day of Ashura also marks the martyrdom of Imam Hussain (RA), the beloved grandson of the Prophet ﷺ, who stood for justice and truth against the tyranny of Yazid. His sacrifice at Karbala teaches us the value of patience, steadfastness, and standing against oppression.
- Faith over fear: Imam Hussain (RA) stood firm despite knowing the outcome.
- Unity of Ummah: The tragedy reminds us of the dangers of division.
- Justice and sacrifice: True leadership involves selflessness and moral courage.
